Enriched for life offers a variety of fun and eduational classes for youth and adults. We offer classes in:  Fitness, Sports & Recreation, Aquatics, Life Skills, Special Interests, Academics, The Arts, and Business & Technology.  Fees are charged to cover all costs connected with the program.

You can register for class online, in person, by mail, or by phone (269-323-6700).  The Community Enrichment office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  See the home page for summer hours.

The "Enriched For Life" class catalog is published three times each year, in August, December and May.  The catalog is mailed to residents in Portage, Schoolcraft, Vicksburg and Mattawan, as well as many areas in Kalamazoo.

To offset the cost of publishing and mailing the catalog, we offer a limited amount of advertising space.  If your business would be interested in placing an ad, please contact Cherie McMullin at 269 323-6700 for information.

The Curious Kids Summer Academies are offered in the "Enriched for Life" Summer catalog.

Our Summer Academies Program offers Fun-tastic activities throughout the summer for school-aged children. From an on-site cake class to painting your own canvas to an all-day adventure in Saugatuck, there is a class for you! Before and after childcare is available.  Registration begins on May 2nd.

For information regarding Summer Academies, please contact Sue Haroldson at sharoldson@portageps.org or call 269-323-6764.

All academies are based at the Portage Community Education Center, 1010 W. Milham, Portage, MI 49024. Please be prompt. Academies will begin on time. You are encouraged to arrive ten minutes before your scheduled time. Once you arrive, please check-in with the counselors and pick up your name tag. Please use the parking lot in the front of the building (P.C.E.C.) for drop-off and pick-up.
To be eligible to participate in the Curious Kid Summer Academy Program, a student must be six years of age or have completed a full year of kindergarten.
When an academy reaches maximum enrollment, no others will be accepted for that date. To avoid disappointment, you are encouraged to enroll early.

The Curious Kids Summer Academy Program of the Portage Public Schools is a non-profit program. Fees assessed for academies are used for salaries of instructors, counselors, and other expenses connected with the program. It is necessary, therefore, that a minimum number of people enroll in each academy. If enrollment is not sufficient, it may be necessary to cancel the academy or combine it with another academy. If an academy is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified before the beginning date. Come at your registered time unless otherwise contacted.
In extreme cases of inappropriate behavior, the Curious Kids program may decline enrollment for future academies.
If this should occur, any money collected for academies in which the child is unable to participate will be refunded.

NOTE: Please be aware that half-day academies do not include lunch unless specifically stated in the description. If you sign your child up for back-to-back a.m. AND p.m. academies and you would like a lunch to be provided, please call Sue Haroldson at 323-6764 or Tammy Karmon-Hoffman at 323-6765. If you need child care BETWEEN academies, arrangements with the School Age Child Care program need to be made at least 2 days in advance.

EARLY DROP-OFF & LATE PICK-UP:  Children should not be dropped off for an Academy earlier than 10 minutes before the Academy is scheduled to begin. Children found in the building at inappropriate times will be taken to the Child Care program where parents will be responsible to pay for services. Please make plans to have your child picked up at the scheduled arrival time. If you are late in picking up your child from an Academy, efforts are made to call you. The Academy Counselors will follow your instructions on the registration form as to:
1) Taking your child to the Curious Kids Child Care Program where:
a) The child has been pre-registered
b) The child is not pre-registered and a fee of $5.00 per every 15 minute period that your child is here will be charged. These fees are due at time of pick-up.
2) Leaving your child in the lobby to wait for you unsupervised.
Occasionally, due to traffic and/or road construction, our bus/van runs behind schedule. If we will be more than 1/2 hour late, all efforts are made to notify parents.

WHAT TO BRING:  Lunches and snacks are provided to students on all full-day academies. Participants are welcome to bring their own sack lunch should they not wish to eat the provided one. Please mark the sack with the child’s name. We encourage the children to carry a backpack or book bag containing reading material, swimsuit, towel, and travel games. Due to academy schedules, time is not always planned to visit souvenir shops.

SPECIAL NEEDS: If your child has developmental or physical limitations, please contact Sue Haroldson at 323-6764 or Tammy Karmon-Hoffman at 323-6765, prior to enrollment in an academy. We will attempt to address your request depending upon the specific academy arrangements.

WRAP AROUND CHILD CARE:  Child Care services are available before and/or after academies, BUT NEED TO BE SET UP IN ADVANCE. The hourly Child Care fee for children enrolled in our "Academy Only" child care program is $3.25, providing that previous arrangements have been made. This program is only available on days that the children are enrolled in academies. Call 323-6764 for more information.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT:  Parents are welcome to attend as a regular participant, paying the regular enrollment fee.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  Scholarships are available to youth who may otherwise not be able to participate. The same federal guidelines used to determine eligibility for free or reduced lunches will be applied. Scholarship applications may be picked up at the Curious Kids Office.
All applications should be turned into the Curious Kids Office AT LEAST 24 hours prior to the Academy. Please be sure to notify the office if you are unable to attend an academy. Failure to do this could affect your eligibility for future academies.

REFUNDS / INCLEMENT WEATHER:  In the event of inclement weather, every precaution will be taken to insure the safety of the children. Whenever possible, ACADEMIES WILL "GO" RAIN OR SHINE. Students are encouraged to come appropriately dressed for the weather conditions. Refunds will be made if: 1) an enrolled student cancels within FIVE business days of the scheduled academy, 2) it is necessary to cancel an academy due to insufficient enrollment, or 3) adverse weather conditions exist, or other unforeseen circumstances occur. We may attempt to schedule indoor events in place of outdoor events if there is inclement weather. An adjustment in academy fees could be made, if this is the case. Your understanding in this matter is appreciated.
